  4.    FormatMaster has a new look!  The format screen has been completely
  5. revised.  It is now an attractive display that includes a series of
  6. boxes that contain pertinent dynamic formatting data.

  8.    Since it was first introduced, FM has used the system diskette BIOS
  9. to format and verify floppy diskettes.  In the early days of
  10. development, FM was generally faster, even with verification turned ON,
  11. than the DOS format utility.  DOS version 3.2 and above included a
  12. facility to format floppy drives, indeed any drive, through a an I/O
  13. control for block devices function.  This speeded up floppy drive
  14. formatting considerably and resulted in the DOS format utility being
  15. faster than FM (with verification ON).

  17.    FM version 3.00 now includes two options that utilize the DOS block
  18. device control function for formatting and verification.  These options
  19. appear on the FM main menu as "DOS Format/Verify" and "Simultaneous
  20. Format/Verify".  If executed under DOS 3.1 or earlier, these menu items
  21. will be disabled since the earlier versions of DOS did not support disk
  22. formatting throught the block device control function.  If either of
  23. these new options are used, DOS will be called to perfom the formatting
  24. and verification.  The difference between these options is that the
  25. first operates in FormatMaster fashion by keeping the format and
  26. verification processes separately distinct.  The second option operates
  27. exactly like the DOS format program in that it performs verification
  28. during the format.  On a fast 386 machine running 3.3 DOS, FormatMaster
  29. will format and verify a disk using the second option 15% faster than
  30. DOS.

  39.    New-Ware believes that formatting fresh, good quality diskettes
  40. without verification is perfectly safe.  New-Ware obtains diskettes from
  41. MEI\Micro Center (Columbus, Ohio 1-800-634-3478) in bulk lots at 21
  42. cents per disk and has formatted many thousands of product distribution
  43. diskettes in an XT clone 5 1/4" 360K drive without attendant
  44. verification.  In three years, exactly 13 5 1/4" disks have been
  45. returned as faulty.  Of these, 5 were completely readable on all 4
  46. New-Ware computer disk drives, 5 had been physically damaged in the
  47. mail, and the remaining 3 had undetermined problems.  If those three are
  48. considered to be faulty do to the lack of a verification check, that
  49. still is an impressive performance record and says something about both
  50. FM and MEI diskette quality.
